Browns' HC Todd Monken sounds off about offensive operations

The Cleveland Browns were unable to overcome the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week One of the 2026-27 NFL season, 34-10.

Cleveland's disastrous performance on Sunday afternoon fell on the hands of the offense, as the unit failed to consistently move the ball downfield. This unfortunately forced the defense into brutal field position for most of the contest, which led to Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence's incredible four-touchdown performance.

During his opening remarks to the media following the loss, head coach Todd Monken told reporters that the Browns "didn't execute on the road" the way they expected to this past weekend.

"We didn't execute on the road the way we expected," Monken claimed. "Without really seeing the tape, the obvious issues came in operation, and a couple delay of games and false starts that we thought we cleaned up, but obviously we didn't."

One of the most pressing issues for the Browns' offense on Sunday was the simple line-of-scrimmage operations that Monken stressed for most of the offseason.

Of the seven penalties on the Browns in Week One, five flags came on the offensive side of the ball. Cleveland committed two delay-of-game penalties, two holding calls (both on guard Zion Johnson), and one false start. In addition to the miscues on offense, Monken also elected to waste a timeout multiple times instead of taking another delay-of-game penalty, which could have significantly impacted momentum in a much closer contest.

However, Monken did not place all the blame on quarterback Deshaun Watson and the rest of the offense, as he continued to tell reporters that the players have "worked hard," and the coaching must improve.

"It's not about the work, [because] our guys work," Monken reiterated. "Since I've been here, our guys have worked. All they've done is come in every day and give us everything they got, so obviously we have to coach better."

With one week of football under their belt, the Browns are set to take on former quarterback Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week Two in what will be an intense matchup.
