Samsung’s Privacy Display and TriFold merge in the Huawei Mate XT2

Huawei has unveiled its new Mate XT2 foldable, offering a tri-fold design that also implements Samsung’s Privacy Display feature from the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

The Privacy Display is Samsung’s big selling point on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, with the special tech adjusting the pixels in the display so that, when active, light is only emitted to where you’re the only one who can clearly see what’s showing on screen. It’s pretty awesome.

Samsung’s other big recent innovation in smartphones was the Galaxy Z TriFold, which launched with a 10-inch inner display that hides beneath a normal-ish smartphone screen. It’s also pretty awesome, though Samsung stopped selling the device pretty abruptly earlier this year.

Now, the Huawei Mate XT2 is here to merge the two together.

Huawei’s latest tri-fold device swaps out the previous design, which used a portion of the main display as an outer screen when folded, to match what Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold offered. The inward-facing design will likely better-protect the main display compared to the previous setup.

The 10.2-inch display also has an optional privacy display, using tech that sounds similar to Samsung’s. As The Verge points out, this is only available on the 16GB/1TB version of the Mate XT2 and is an additional cost on top of that variant. And the Mate XT2 isn’t cheap, coming in at around $3,000 USD (¥19,999). This is likely a device that won’t see the light of day outside of China, as much as that purple colorway looks great.

It’s powered by a Kirin 9050 Pro, HarmonyOS 7, measures 12.3mm when folded, weighs 299g, has stylus support, and also featured IP58/59 dust/water resistance. There are three cameras around back; 50MP main, 50MP 3.5x telephoto, and 40MP ultrawide, and there’s a 5,600 mAh battery.
